After beating Akron and Western Michigan by the combined score of 108-6, Ohio State steps up a bit in class to host Marshall.
Things have come so easy for the Buckeyes that the oddsmaker installed them as larger favorites here than they were against Western Michigan.
I think that's a mistake. Charles Huff has coached Marshall each of the past three seasons. The Thundering Herd have made a bowl game each of those years. It's a mistake to think they are cream puffs. Just two seasons ago, Marshall upset both Notre Dame and James Madison as double-digit road 'dogs.
Certainly I'm not saying Marshall can match Ohio State in talent because it can't. The Buckeyes hold huge edges at every position. But Ohio State quarterback Will Howard is not dynamic and the Buckeyes begin Big Ten Conference play next week at Michigan State. There's no reason for the Buckeyes to go all out in this matchup.
Marshall opened with a 45-3 win against Stoney Brook before losing to Virginia Tech, 31-14, two weeks ago. The Thundering Herd covered as three-touchdown underdogs against the Hokies, who only outgained Marshall by 60 yards.
Ohio State may have the best running back tandem in the country with TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins. But Marshall has good running backs, too, headed by A.J. Turner, who is averaging a mind-boggling 15.8 yards per run on 14 rushes.
Marshall quarterback Stone Earle isn't much of a downfield passer, but he's a capable runner and has experience. He should be savvy enough to not commit turnovers by forcing things.
If Marshall plays even a semi-clean game, it should cover this lopsided number.
(Editor's note: Stephen Nover has won 64 percent of his premium/free college football plays this season. Stephen has five premium CFB plays going Saturday in addition to this free selection. Stephen also has his Canadian Football League Game of the Month on Saturday. Stephen is 28-10-1 on his last 39 CFL plays, including 9-1-1 on his past 11.)
