Thursday nights for the most part have produced some pretty high-scoring affairs this year but I feel that the conditions are finally right for a lower-scoring "chess match" style of game where field position will prove to be pivotal in the outcome; when the smoke finally clears at the end of this one, I expect this total to sneak below the posted number. This is an ultra important divisional contest, if New Orleans wins, it will overtake Carolina for the top spot. Of course, the Panthers have different ideas today, a victory for them will solidify their standings as top dog in the division. The Saints are coming off their best overall game of the year, a 44-23 beatdown win over the Packers, a team which came in averaging 36.3 points over its previous four games. As good as Drew Brees and the offense looked, I'd have to say that the New Orleans defense was even better; I expect that dominance to be carried over here. The achilles heel of course for New Orleans though has been its play on the road, it's struggled for years away from friendly confines. A short week won't help matters for the visitors either. I had the UNDER in Carolina/Seattle last week, and the Panthers defense finally came to play, the final score was a 13-9 setback. The games only TD came with just 47 seconds left to play and I think the Panthers unit will be able to carry that commanding performance over in this one as well. Offensively though Carolina continues to struggle with consistency, last week the unit made three tips inside the 20 but came away with just six points; the Panthers' 46.2 percent TD effeciency in that area ranks them a dismal 28th. Expect to see a heavy dose of the run game from the home side, RB DeAngelo Williams is back after missing six games. And that's good news for the streaky Cam Newton who was held to 181 yards passing and who was sacked four times in last years 17-13 home win over the Saints on December 22nd. Note that New Orleans has seen the total go UNDER the number in both games that it's played on a "Thursday" the last two season, while Carolina has seen it fall below the number in 13 of its last 21 home games. The situation, the numbers and the trends all point to the UNDER as the sharp wager in this one.
