Money Line: -160.00 San Diego (Home)
Result: Win
This is a 6* SITUATIONAL PITCHING MISMATCH on the San Diego Padres.
The visitors hand the ball to Chris Rusin (5-7, 4.78 ERA) who is coming off his second straight complete game, this time against the Giants on Thursday, allowing three runs off six hits with one walk and five K's. Rusin though has been all over the map with his consistency this season, note that he gave up 11 runs in two innings in a start two weeks ago and is a poor 1-5 with a 4.83 ERA in all road contests thus far (also a deplorable 1-6 with a ballooned 5.68 ERA in all "night" games this season). The home side counters with ace James Shields (10-6, 3.83 ERA) who finally bounced back after a tough stretch to dominate the Phillies on Sunday, giving up one run off six scattered hits over seven innings in the victory. Shields and the Friars have to be feeling pretty confident that he can keep the momentum rolling in this matchup as well as he's 5-2 with a very respectable 2.93 ERA in front of the home town crowd thus far (also 6-3 with a 3.60 ERA in all "night" contests). We primarily base our MLB picks on starting pitching, "situations," motivation and scheduling and in this case, the overwhelming factors working in favor of Shields and the PADRES are just too good to turn down in our opinion.
