Point Spread: -4.00 | -123.00 Georgia State (Home)
Result: Loss
This is an 8* play on Georgia State.
The Panthers have gone just 2-33 since moving into the FBS ranks, head coach Trent Miles' lone win in two seasons is by one point over Abilene Christian to start last year. But with a chance to double its win total, we look for the home side to find a way to get the job done at the end of the night in what is clearly a favorable matchup.
The Panthers:
Miles has plenty to work with in 2015/16 though, as 16 starters return, including ten on offense, along with a growing roster of scholarship players. The offense was a strength last year for the team and it will be once again be this season as senior QB Nick Arbuckle completed 60.4 percent of his passes and threw for 3,283 yards with 23 TD's and 17 INT's. Arbuckle has plenty of returning weapons to throw to and has a much deeper and more talented supporting cast all the way around. The run game should also be decent as Kyler Neal, who averaged 5.2 yards per carry in four games before getting injured, is back and ready to go. The Panthers were atrocious defensively though and will once again be a work in progress on that side of the ball, but with that said, with another year to develop, Georgia State should be a lot better as a mix of junior college transfers, UAB transfer Alonzo McGee and four-year starter Joe Peterson will all be leaned upon.
The 49ers:
Charlotte is the newest member of the FBS ranks and joins the Conference USA after winning ten games over the last two seasons under coach Brad Lambert. Like the Panthers, the 49ers are strong offensively and weak defensively. The offense would score 22 TD drives of 90 seconds or less last year and it's led by RB Kalif Phillips. The team also returns its top two receivers in Trent Bostick and Austin Duke. However, there is some question at QB, both Matt Johnson and Lee McNeil will be battling for the position. The defensive unit has some talent, but very little depth, new coordinator Matt Wallerstedt inherits a work in progress.
The bottom line:
Charlotte faces a tough first year, it's gone from an FCS competitor to an FBS program in just two seasons. Can anyone say predictable letdown spot? The 49ers now face a difficult schedule, the first two years the team would ease its way into the season facing FCS and Division II schools. This year however 11 of their first 12 will be against the FBS.
There's only one way to go for Georgia State and that's up, but with 80 scholarship players this year, up from the mid-60's last season, we can expect some incremental strides in Miles' third season as head coach. And it all gets started in the first game of 2015/16. We look for the PANTHERS to do just enough to secure the ATS victory.
