This is a 10* TOTAL BLOWOUT on the OVER in the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
For a number of different reasons I expect this total to eclipse the posted number as the game comes down the stretch. Neither of these offensive minded clubs has been playing to too many OVERS of late, but I finally feel that the conditions are right for a shootout. The Wings will give rookie goaltender Petr Mrazek an 11th straight start, the netminder has been instrumental in helping Detroit go on a 9-1-0 run; Mrazek has posted a tiny 0.67 GAA over his last three. However, I think that Mrazek and the Wings will have their hands full today with this highly motivated Penguins team which is coming off a 5-0 loss at Vancouver on Saturday. If history is any precedence, then we can absolutely expect a battle today, these teams have split the past eight meetings and the last three have gone past regulation, including Detroit's 4-3 home victory on October 23rd. If the Pens have one weakness, it's obviously in goal, Marc-Andre Fleury can look brilliant at times and pretty pedestrian in others, note that he's just 5-5-1 with a 2.93 GAA vs. Detroit all time. Fleury has posted back-to-back shutouts, but has never recorded three straight in his career and I simply don't see that happening today vs. this high-powered and super confident Wings team (it comes as little surprise to learn that Detroit has the league's best power play at 25.5 percent; note that the unit has scored in three straight games and is 14 for 41 in its last 13). Also note that the Pens get a lift today with the expected return of Blake Comeau, who returns after sitting out with injury for 20 games: "Any time you miss that amount of time, especially at this time of the year (where) everyone's playing at a really high pace, it's always important for me to keep my legs in the best shape that I could," Comeau reflected last night. "And now it's just a matter of getting the timing down," (note that Pittsburgh is 7-0-2 when Comeau scores this year). It's also interesting to note that Detroit has seen the total go OVER the number in six of seven this year after a three-game unbeaten streak; and note that Pittsburgh has seen the total sail above the posted number in seven of 13 following a non-conference contest this season. In my opinion, all signs do indeed point to the OVER as the savvy move in this one.
