The set-up: It's NFL Week 14 and the New York Jets are in Denver to take on the Broncos. There were many who thought that the Jets would be battling the Browns and maybe the 49ers for the overall No. 1 pick in the 2018 draft as the 2017 season opened and there were more than a few who thought that the Broncos could rebound from a record in 2016, to challenge the Chiefs and Raiders in the AFC West. The Jets opened 0-2 and the refrain, "Here we go again" was prominent in the New York area. However, the Jets rebounded to win three in a row after that and while the team comes into this contest a modest 5-7, the Jets have been way more competitive than almost anyone would have believed (Jets are 7-4-1 ATS). As for Denver, a 3-1 start to the 2017 season has quickly turned into a 'nightmare,' as the Broncos get set to host the Jets looking to break an eight-game losing streak in which the team has also gone 0-8 ATS (now that's bad football!).
NY Jets: The Jets beat the slumping KC Chiefs 38-31 last Sunday, as QB Josh McCown completed 26 of 36 pass for 331 yards and a TD, while also rushing for a pair of scores (who is this guy?). McCown is completing 67.8% for 2,880 yards with 18 TDs and just eight INTs (96.7 QB rating). He's done all that with an impotent running game averaging only 106.8 YPG (18th). Little-known WRs Jermaine Kearse (51 catches / 5 TDs) and Robby Anderson (49 / 16.8 YPC / 7 TDs) have been more than capable.
Denver: The Broncos have tried three QBs (Siemian, Osweiler and Lynch) and neither is much of an answer. In fairness to Lynch, he's been sidelined most of the season with an injury. However, Denver QBs are completing only 57.5% with 14 TDs and 18 INTs for a collective QB rating of 69.7. The running game, once among the league's best, ranks just 17th at 107.3 YPG. That leaves an offense which scores only 17.2 PPG (27th). The once-proud defense still ranks high in yards allowed (295.6 YPG ranks 5th) but in the all-important category of points allowed, the Broncos rank 31st (2nd-to-last) at 26.2 PPG. The team's minus-16 TO margin (also ranked 31st), doesn't help.
The pick: A switch back to Trevor Siemian at QB vs. Miami last Sunday didn't much work (he threw three picks in the 35-9 loss), so there is little reason to expect too much different here. Compare Denver's effort vs. Miami (9 points on 270 yards) to the Jets' effort vs. KC, in which they overcame a two-TD deficit to win, 38-31 (Jets rolled up 488 yards!). While the Broncos are on an 0-8 ATS run, the Jets are now 7-2-1 ATS their last 10. Make the Jets an 8* play.
