This is an 8* TOTAL EXPRESS on the UNDER between the Montreal Canadiens and the Washington Capitals.
For a number of different reasons, I look for this total to sneak below the posted number once the final horn sounds. The Capitals have a new coach in Barry Trotz, who took Nashville to the playoffs seven times, advancing to the second round twice before failing to qualify the last two years. Trotz preaches tough defensive play and I expect the home side to play with a concerted effort in that deparment tonight: "Barry's teams have always played with structure, discipline and intensity, and I look forward to him leading us to success for many years to come," Caps' GM Brian MacLellan said in the offseason. Braden Holtby returns as the Washington starter between the pipes, he was 23-15-4 with a 2.85 GAA last year. Holtby though will benefit greatly this season with a revamped defense in front of him as the Capitals added Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen from rival Pittsburgh; those two talents will join Karl Alzner, Mike Green and John Carlson to form a stout blue line. Note that Holtby owns a minuscule 0.99 GA while winning all five against the Canadiens, including two shutouts. Despite it only being the second game of the year, Montreal will be tired here after last night's 4-3 win at Toronto, meaning we can see the team play with an added incentive on the defensive side of the ice. For the most Carey Price looked solid last night and I think he can carry that momentum over here. I feel that the situation lends itself to a lower-scoring contest; play on the UNDER.
