This is a 10* TOTAL OF THE YEAR on the UNDER between the LA Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs.
Milwaukee lost last night to Pittsburgh which means that LA clinched a playoff spot with its 14-5 win over Chicago yesterday. Both the Dodgers and Cubs have been playing to some pretty high scoring affairs of late, but I think the conditions are finally right for a lower-scoring duel. A quick look at the Over/Under lines for both teams the last few games sees the Dodgers having seen the total go OVER the number in nine of their last ten; suffice it to say, after punching their ticket to the postseason last night, I'm expecting an immediate drop off in production today. The Cubs have seen it eclipse the number in eight of their last ten, including two in a row. The teams have also played five times this year and the total has gone 4-0-1. All of these OVER trends collide, definitely putting value on the UNDER. The visitors turn to Roberto Hernandez (8-11, 4.06 ERA), who gave up two runs off six hits while walking two over just 3 2/3's innings in his team's eventual 11-3 win over Colorado on Monday. A date vs. the soft-hitting Cubbies is just what the doctor ordered for Hernandez to get untracked though, he has faced Chicago twice in his career while with Philadelphia and has gone a very respectable 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA, holding the opposition to just a .162 batting average. The home side counters with Felix Doubront (2-1, 1.50 ERA) who has been a great pick up for the team, he most recently held Pittsburgh to four hits over six scoreless frames in his team's 6-4 win. Note that LA has seen the total go UNDER the number in 20 of 36 this year vs. left-handed starters, while Chicago has seen it dip below the posted number in 40 of 75 home contests. The situation, the numbers and the trends all point to the UNDER as the sharp wager in this contest.
