This is an 8* BLOCKBUSTER on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It's only Week 3 but it's do-or-die for the visitors, despite a couple of injuries, I think the Buccaneers lay it all on the line today and at the very least, come away with the comfortable ATS cover. Atlanta looked like a World Beater in Week 1 when it came away with the 37-34 win over the Saints, but quickly came back down to Earth last week in Cincinnati, losing 24-10. Tampa Bay blew a golden oportunity to get back to .500 as it lost at home to the Rams who were using their third-string QB last Sunday: "We have a lot of guys who are anxious to get back on the field," Bucs' defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said on Tuesday. "A short week can be a positive, and we want to turn it into a positive." Tampa was just 4-12 last year and had big expectations coming into the season under the direction of new head coach Lovie Smith, who would inherit a team which is actually stacked with talent up and down both sides of the line, however the group has clearly under-performed to this point. QB Josh McCown has been shaky so far this year, he's already thrown three INT's, but I think has a big opportunity today vs. this suspect Falcons secondary which was exposed in both Weeks 1 and 2. Tampa has a solid ground game and will look to establish early and often; RB Doug Martin sat out last week with injury, but his backup Bobby Rainey was fantastic in relief, he'd finish with a 144 yards. Note that Atlanta is also dealing with a significant injury as WR Roddy White did not practice this week because of a hamstring issue and he will be a game time decision/limited even if he does start. McCown also catches a break here as Atlanta is the only team in the league which doesn't have a sack and has just one QB hit overall. And as mentioned above, the Falcons have been susceptible to the run, they rank 26th in the league in allowing 154.5 YPG. Tampa's beat up defensive unit also has an opportunity today, Atlanta's line has been brutal thus far, last week Matt Ryan was sacked twice, hit nine times while also throwing three INT's. Smith was brought in to bring about a change in Tampa, but so far it's been another disastrous start, as I stated off the top, this is a do-or-die game for the Bucs, a loss to a division rival and an 0-3 hole and it's time to start planning for 2015/16 (note that the last time a team made the postseason under the current format after an 0-3 start was Buffalo in 1998). While the outright win isn't out of the question in my opinion, for all of the reasons listed above, I'm ultimately going to recommend playing TAMPA BAY with the points on Thursday night.
