ASA PLAY ON 8* OVER: Texas State Bobcats at UL Monroe Warhawks, Saturday at 7:30 PM ET: Game #127
Very nice weather expected in this one Saturday evening in Monroe, LA and the offenses should flourish. UL Monroe is off a thrashing at the hands of Army but the Black Knights have looked great on defense early this season. Now the Warhawks, after that road loss, are at home and hosting a Texas State team that is all about offense. The Bobcats have an offensive-minded head coach and defense is a bit of an afterthought! Yes, Texas State's game against UTSA last week did go to overtime but even just looking at regulation points, the teams combined for 82 points in 4 quarters of play! The prior week the Bobcats game against SMU stayed under the total but it saw the Mustangs combined with Texas State for 960 yards of offense! Starting QB Brady McBride played in that one and then back-up Tyler Vitt played in last week's OT loss to the Roadrunners. McBride is expected back this week but, either way, the Texas State offense has proven just fine with either QB under center! The Bobcats play an uptempo style under 2nd-year coach Jake Spavital and he has taken over play-calling duties this season. Texas State's weakness has been, and continues to be, on the defensive side of the ball where they allowed 32.6 ppg last season and have allowed an average of 38 points (not including OT) so far this season. UL Monroe also is known for a weak defense as they allowed 38.7 points per game last season and 483.5 yards per game. The Warhawks averaged 460.9 yards of offense per game last season (#17 in the nation!) and go from facing a disciplined Army defense that is playing very well to facing a Texas State defense that has been unable to get stops again this season. Look for a huge day from a UL Monroe offense that returned key star performers in RB Josh Johnson and TE Josh Pederson. Last week Army dominated time of possession with their ground game and so the Warhawks offense could never really get on track. New starting QB Colby Suits did complete 14 of 19 and he's in line for a huge day with plenty more attempts against this weak Bobcats defense. Look for a back and forth high-scoring SunBelt shootout in this one. Bet the over in this Saturday evening match-up.
