The Mountaineers will cruise to a home win over the Hoyas in Friday's Big 12-Big East Battle. Aside from being much more battle-tested, they have significant advantages that should result in a double-digit victory. The first is West Virginia's prolific three-point shooting. WVU attempts a high volume of three balls (49.9% of their shot attempts) and still shoots a high percentage, as three of its top four scorers shoot over 40 percent from deep. Unless they get great looks at the rim, they don't settle for two-pointers (347th in two-point attempt rate), which happens to be the strength of Georgetown's defense. The Hoyas struggle to defend the three-point line, though.
The second advantage working in the Mountaineers' favor is Georgetown's inability to knock down three-pointers. West Virginia holds its opponents under 30 percent from deep, plus it's tough to score against inside the arc, ranking 35th nationally in opponent two-point percentage (44.4%).
With the Mountaineers' slow pace of play (258th in adjusted tempo), I don't anticipate the Hoyas making enough shots in the halfcourt to keep the score close enough to cover the 7.5-point spread.
